CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The early thaw on the lowered end of the Sheyenne River Valley has reduced the overall spring flood risk according to NWS forecaster Greg Gust.

Meanwhile, Gust said the flood forecast for the Sheyenne River in Valley City improved. He said the probability of the Sheyenne River in Valley City reaching 12 feet is at 50 percent.

Gust said some thawing has occurred in the northern end of the Sheyenne River Valley but 3 to 5 inches of moisture remains locked in the snow pack and Devils Lake & Stump Lake could rise to 3 feet above current levels this spring.

Gust talked about the forecast with reporter Steve Urness after a flood preparedness meeting held in Valley City on March 15th.
