CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) CHI Mercy Health Foundation is the recipient of three local business grants received in support of the EKG Fund.

Alliance Pipeline and the Shopko Foundation have donated $500 each and Casey’s General Store has contributed a $250 grant to this fund.

CHI Mercy Health Foundation spokeswoman Stephanie Mayfield said, “The EKG machines at the hospital are two of the most utilized pieces of equipment and are extremely important to maintain for our community.  Heart disease kills more people in the United States than any other cause! There are 169 deaths per every 100,000 people in the US per year. The EKG is the most important test when a person is having a heart attack or an abnormal rhythm that we can perform within minutes of symptoms starting. The EKG can determine if a patient is having a heart attack within minutes of arrival at the hospital. Life-saving treatment can immediately be started and can save lives. Every minute without treatment more heart muscle dies.  The goal is to have an EKG done within 10 minutes of a patient presenting symptoms with chest pain.”

Mayfield said, “CHI Mercy Health is thankful to have received these local grants to purchase updated, life-saving equipment for our community.”
