N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol spent a blustery Tuesday afternoon assisting numerous accidents involving high-profile vehicles in the region.
Sgt. Tom Herzig reports that three incidents were reported nearly two hours after one another. The first occurred at 2:30 PM North of Woodworth when the 2010 Volvo semi driven by Ron Hintz was blown into the east ditch, rolling the truck an trailer. Sgt. Herzig states that Hintz was not injured.
The second accident occurred at 4:30 PM when Farah Hassan was pulling off of I-94 onto Highway 1. Hassan encountered winds that blew his 2004 Freightliner onto its side in the east ditch. He was transported to Valley City Hospital for treatment of injuries.
The third reported accident of the day happened on Highway 52 north of Jamestown. Dario Vavala of Illinois was traveling south when his 2000 Freightliner was blown onto its side in both north and southbound lanes. The highway was shut down for two hours and Stutsman County Deputies helped divert traffic heading into Jamestown. Vavala was treated and released.
“What did all of these have in common? They all involved a high-profile vehicle and nearly empty van trailers,” Sgt. Herzig stated.
The Highway Department warns that during inclement weather, high-profile, long-load type, and permitted overdimensional vehicles have restricted travel. North Dakota law restricts movement for these vehicles when wind or other conditions may cause the vehicle or attachment to swerve, whip, sway, or fail to follow in the path of the towing vehicle.
