(NewsDakota.com)- Long time Shanley Basketball Coach Craig Murie passed away Saturday. Murie, an 1969 Edgeley high school graduate, played 2 seasons at The University of North Dakota and 2 season at Valley City State University where he was named the most valuable graduating senior in the conference. Former KRDK and KXMB sports director Tom Coyne covered Murie’s Deacons teams in the 1980s, standing at 6’9 he remembers Murie as a towering figure
In 26 seasons at Shanley, Murie lead them to 4 girls basketball state championships getting titles in 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1989. He was also honored as Class A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year twice. Murie coached during the infancy of high school girls’ basketball in North Dakota. Coyne credits him with helping shape the game into what it is today
After his coaching career came to an end Murie became a lecturer in the NDSU math department. He also worked 38 season as a spotter for the NDSU football announcer and spent 27 seasons at the officials’ table for NDSU mens’ and womens’ basketball games.
