(NewsDakota.com) In the battle of the Cardinals, it was Ellendale High edging out Carrington to win the Class B District 5 Boys Basketball Tournament Monday night at the Jamestown Civic Center. Two other teams clinched Region III Tournament berths in two of the most shocking outcomes in tournament history.
Region Qualifier: Edgeley/Kulm/Montpeiler 53 LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 26
EKM advanced to the Region III tournament after outscoring LLM 17-0 in the first seven minutes of the second half, and 20-2 in the third quarter. LaMoure had 16 turnovers, and will miss out on a regional tournament appearance for the first time since 1999.
Lane Hanson had a double-double for EKM with 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Loboes were lead by Levi Hirschkorn’s 16 points.
Region Qualifier: Midkota 70 Oakes 60
The Mustangs, who won only one game before the playoffs, won their second game in a row with a rousing victory over the Tornadoes; shooting 40 percent from the field in the first half to Oakes’ 18 percent.
Midkota had a lead as large as 29 points, and were lead by Mason Smith’s 18 points. Oakes had a team high 12 points from Andy Castro.
Championship: Ellendale 56 Carrington 53
In undoubtedly the closest game of the year, the largest lead was just seven points. Ellendale put in almost 60 percent of their shots in the second half to Carrington’s 47 points to give them the victory in the end.
Ellendale’s Brennan Vance dropped in 19 points in the victory, while Garrett Bickett scored 16 points for Carrington.
