Lake, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The semifinal day of the District 7 tournament finished with plenty of fireworks as Harvey-Wells County (HWC), the three seed, outscored New Rockford-Sheyenne (NRS), the two seed 80-75 to advance into the championship game against top seeded and defending state champion Four Winds-Minnewauken (FWM) on Monday (27th) night. The District 7 tourney will finish up on Monday evening with Dakota Prairie facing Benson County at 4:00 P.M., pregame will start at 3:40 on 103.1 FM (The Raven) and newsdakota.com Game 2 will have NRS facing Warwick and the title game to follow. Warwick received a bye in the loser out bracket and advanced to Monday’s game versus NRS.
Loser Out Game——Benson County (BC) 55 Lakota 32
In a loser out contest, the Wildcats from BC received a game 12 points from Spencer Olson, Carter and Garret Tandeski added 11 points, and Keaton Nelsen chipped in 9 points. Nelsen added a game high 8 rebounds and Garret Tandeski and Olson added 7 rebounds. Lakota shot 17 percent from the field (10-57) and finished the year with a 3-18 overall record. BC will take a 7-14 record into their Region 4 qualifying game on Monday.
Semifinal——–FWM 78 DP 53
The Knights of DP showed plenty of fight but could not overcome the relentless pressure for the entire game and fell 78-53 in the first semifinal contest. The Knights losttwice during the season to FWM by scores of 73-35 and 82-41. At halftime of this game the Knights were within striking distance, trailing 41-33. The Indians would not be denied, outscoring DP 37-20 in the second half to win by 25 points. DP scored 23 2nd quarter points thanks to Tyler Loe’s 4 three pointers, he would finish the game with a team high 19 points. Loe also led the Knights with 6 rebounds. Hunter Sand finished with 10 points and a team high 4 assists. DP turned the ball over 17 times in the game.
The Indians were paced by Tronis McKay’s game high 32 points and 9 rebounds. McKay added 3 assists and 1 block. Charlie Black added 14 points and 5 rebounds, Steve Redfox hit for 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. FWM made 34 0f 61 field goal attempts, good for 56 percent. The Indians will take a 19-1 record into the District 7 title game and DP will go to the Region 4 qualifying game with a 9-12 overall record.
Semifinal—–HWC (Hornets) 80 NRS (Rockets) 75
Entertaining is the word to describe the final game of the day at Devils Lake High School as HWC and NRS combined for 155 points and the Hornets came out on top by 5 points. The regular season meeting was almost exactly the opposite kind of game and result. NRS won at Harvey in late January 55-50. A month later HWC was leading 61-60 after3 quarters of play. The Hornets overall balance was the key, 4 players scoring in double figures led by Payton Granger’s 19 points and game high 14 rebounds. Granger would add 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots as well. Younger brother Parker Granger added 17 points (three 3-pointers), which included 4 0f 4 free throws late in the game that sealed the Hornet victory. Parker also added 3 assists. Trevor Schimke added 16 points and 6 assists for the Hornets and Ben Bertsch added 11 points (three 3-pointers).
The Rockets were paced by Jack Schaefer’s game high 34 points (three 3-pointers) and 12 rebounds. Schaefer scored 26 of his 34 points in the first and third quarters (11 and 15). Teddy Allmaras added 12 points (three 3-pointers) and 4 assists. Tyrus Smith went for 10 points. 2 assists, and 2 steals. The Rockets will take a 14-8 0verall record into Monday’s Region 4 qualifying game against Warwick (5-14). HWC improved to 15-6 and will face FWM in the District 7 title, both teams have qualified for the regional tournament.
