(NewsDakota.com) The Carrington High School girls basketball team did not lose a District 5 contest in the course of the 2016-17 regular season, and kept that unblemished record going after winning the District Championship Monday night. Oakes and LaMoure-Litchville/Marion will join the Cardinals and Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier at the Region III Tournament next week

Regional Qualifier: #6 Oakes 60 #5 Ellendale 48

Not even two days after the Tornado family suffered a personal heartbreak, Oakes was able to win their 11th game of the season, and advance to their first Region III tournament.

Oakes had a game high 21 points from Nicole Schmitz, while Shelby Roney contributed 18.

#4 LaMoure-LM 60 #7 Midkota 32

Anna (20) & Ellie (17) Holen combined for 37 points to lead the Loboes past the Mustangs.

The Holens were also the top rebounders as well, big sister Anna leading the way with 8 boards and Ellie with 6. The Loboes held Midkota to 22% shooting, as the Mustangs connected on a meager 8 of 36 shots.

The Mustangs were paced by Joslyn Hoyt’s 11 points.

#1 Carrington 60 #2 Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 53

The Cardinals had 4 players score in double figures led by Maara Nelson’s 14, Emerson Hoornaert (12), Jill Endres (12), and Haley Hewitt’s 10. Hewitt, the Cardinals second leading scorer during the season, left the game early in the second quarter with a right knee injury and did not return.

Carrington led by as many as 12 points (45-33) late in the third quarter. EKM would tie the game at 45-45 after a 12-0 run. The Cards were sparked by a Emerson Hoornaert 3 pointer for a 48-45 lead and outscored the Rebels 15-8 down the stretch for the District 5 title.

The Rebels were led by Allison Giesler’s game high 21 points. Katie Entzi added 14 points and  8 rebounds.
