(NewsDakota.com) The LaMoure-Litchville/Marion, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier and Oakes High School girls basketball teams all won their opening round games at the 2017 North Dakota Class B District 5 Tournament Friday.
#4 LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 44 #5 Ellendale 38
In the first of the triple header, the Loboes established a 10 point lead at the end of the first quarter. It turned out to be the largest lead LLM had in the game. The Cardinals made a game of it, even taking the lead at one point in the second half, but were not able to establish a solid foothold of an advantage in the end.
LLM’s Anna Holen had 21 points in the victory, while Katelyn Dathe put in 12 points for Ellendale.
#2 Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 64 #7 Midkota 35
The Rebels established a 12-0 lead to start the game, and never looked back, as they rolled to the semifinals. EKM outshot the Mustangs by almost 20 percent from the field to propel them to the win.
EKM was lead by a pair of 15 point nights from Kaitlyn Schiele and Katie Entzi. Midkota had a team high nine points from McKenna Frappier.
#6 Oakes 70 #3 Barnes County North 46
In arguably their best performance in some time, the Tornadoes, who lost by just a point to the Bison in January, rolled past BCN Friday; lead by the play of Nicole Schmitz and Sadie Hansen, who each scored 29 and 21 points.
Oakes really ramped things up to start the second half; outscoring BCN 22-8 in the third quarter alone. The Bison had 13 points from Ashley Samek in the defeat.
#1 Carrington did not play Friday, as they earned a first round bye.
Day two starts with loser-out play between Midkota and Barnes County North at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. The semifinals commence around 6 with Carrington and LLM, followed by Oakes and EKM around 7:30. Coverage of the entire tournament starts at 4:15 on TED-FM 98.3/102.7 FM and NewsDakota.com, with the Oakes/EKM contest simulcast on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM.
