N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Recycling is one step closer to being implemented in the community.
The updated contract was presented to the Jamestown City Council and public Wednesday afternoon during a special council meeting. The contract was created based on proposals that were originally sent out and what Renaissance Recycling had submitted. Mayor Katie Andersen reported that the contract was for 5 years with a potential for 5 year renewal.
One of the added sentences in the contract will require Renaissance Recycling and the council to meet annually to discuss progress and issues.
The contract also specifies that the drop off site remain safe and accessible to the public and the cost of residual recycling would be spit between the city and Renaissance for the first 6 months.
Councilman Dan Buchanan brought forth some concerns the public had concerning recycling, namely adding an “opt-out” clause for those who didn’t want to participate. City Attorney Leo Ryan reported that it would then require the city to reenter a bidding process.
Councilwoman Pam Phillips reported that some of her constituents were disappointed that glass would not be included in pickup. Renaissance Recycling Owner Ralph Friebel stated that many other recycling plants had moved away from recycling glass for several reasons.
City Auditor Jeff Fuchs reported that the implementation date was set for July 1st, 2017, pending on the purchase of equipment and other unforeseen circumstances.
