N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Yesterday, three people were recognized for heroic actions.

On July 26, 2016, a reckless driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 29 struck a bridge end at the Wild Rice River crossing. After impact, the vehicle became engulfed in flames, creating toxic smoke, and parts in the engine compartment exploded.

The awarded individuals risked injury or death to rescue the motorist, who was successfully removed from the vehicle but did not survive injuries sustained in the crash. 

Anastacia Hermes, Kindred, received the ND Peace Officers Association (NDPOA) Good Samaritan Award and the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) Colonel’s Award of Excellence. Troopers Adam Malafa and Jed Dahnke both received the NDPOA Bravery Award and the NDHP Distinguished Service Medal.
