D.C. (NewsDakota.com) – The National Transportation Safety Board said the derailment of a grain train near Casselton on December 30th, 2013 was a defective axle.

The crash caused a series of explosions after it the grain train struck by a train carrying crude oil. Investigators said that communications problems may have played a role in the derailment crash.

The NTSB said engineers on the oil train did not hear an emergency announcement about the grain train derailment because they were on a different radio frequency.

NTSB investigators said that after finding the grain train’s broken axle, others like it that might have had similar defects were recalled.

The group also discussed federal rules on buffer cars between locomotives and cars carrying hazardous materials, and the development of advanced braking systems.
