Ukestad of Valley City, ND passed away at the Sheyenne Care Center on January 28, 2017 at the age of 98. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 3 at 2 PM at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City. Burial will take place in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, later in the spring.
Thursday from 5 PM until 7 PM, visitation will be held in the church. The Rosary will be prayed beginning at 7 followed by a prayer service for Marie.
Marie Patricia Grimes was born March 16, 1918, in Williston, ND. She was the fifth of six children born to Joseph J. and Catherine (French) Grimes. She moved with her parents to Jamestown, ND during the summer of 1930. In 1934, she graduated from St. John’s Academy High School in Jamestown. In 1939, she graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Valley City, ND. She worked as a Registered Nurse in several hospitals in North Dakota as well as in California. During World War II, Marie was a member of the Army Nurse Corps, serving at Menlo Park, CA. She trained and served in the Anesthesia Department.
After an honorable discharge, Marie was returned to work at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. On August 13, 1947, she and Edward Ukestad were united in marriage at St. James Basilica, Jamestown and made their home in Valley City. Edward passed away on February 16, 1995.
Marie was employed as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital and the Sheyenne Care Center. She was a member of St. Catherine’s Altar Society, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, ND Nurses Association, and member of American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Marie is survived by her four sons: Tom (Kaye) of El Paso, TX, Richard (Paulette) of Dickinson, ND, Joel (Jodee) of Valley City, ND, and James (Rebecca) of Jamestown, ND; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mae McLaughlin of Mesa, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; parents, Joseph and Catherine Grimes; sisters, Ellen Rickl, Lucille Marquardt, and Rose Latka; brothers, James and Joseph; and a great-grandchild.
