N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-In a battle of unbeaten class B girls basketball teams, it was the Bearkats of North Star that walked away still perfect with a 53-49 triumph over the Carrington Cardinals. The top ranked Bearkats (16-0) handed the Cards their first loss of the season (14-1). North Star jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, and led 17-12 at the end of the opening quarter.  Carrington responded after the sluggish start and went on a 29-11 run between the first and second quarters and led 31-22 late in the first half. The Bearkats scored the final 4 points of the half and trailed Carrington 31-26 at the break. The Cards would also lead by 6 (40-34) at the end of the third quarter before North Star would rally in the 4th outscoring the Cards 19-9 and pull out the 4 point win.

Carrington was paced by Haley Hewitt’s team high 17 points and 3 assists. Hewitt also added 3 steals in the game. McKenzie Johnson gave the Cards a big boost off the bench in the first half, connecting on 8 of her 11 points in the first quarter which included a pair of 3-pointers. Maara Nelson added a game high 5 steals and added 6 points for the Cards.

Macey Kvilvang led the Bearkats with a game high 22 points and 9 rebounds. Steph Miller added 20 points for North Star, the duo combined to score 25 of the teams 27  second half points. Kvilvang sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 6.6 seconds to go, after Hewitt hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 51-49 with 8 seconds remaining.

Carrington will be back in action on Monday night in Harvey against the Hornets of Harvey-WC. The game will be aired on AM 1600 KDAK and newsdakota.com Pregame will start around 7:15. The Hornets were receiving votes in last weeks poll.
