CITY (VCSUVikings.com)- In their 2nd meeting of the season VCSU defeated Mayville State in a pair of NSAA games. After losing a 28 point lead the women held on for a 77-72 win. The men outscored The Comets 44-31 in the 2nd half to win 70-56. Saturday Valley City State host Waldorf with a 3:00 pm start time. Pregame stats at 2:45 on KOVC and NewsDakota.com.

 

 

WBB: VCSU 77 MSU 72

After racing out to a 28-point first half lead, the Valley City State women’s basketball team withstood a fourth quarter rally to defeat Mayville State 77-72 Friday night.  

After trailing 9-4 early in the first quarter the Vikings picked up the tempo forcing the Comets into multiple turnovers. Over a seven-minute stretch the Vikings went on a 24-0 run, giving them a 28-11 lead after the first quarter. The Vikings continued their hot shooting and solid defense take a 44-16 midway through the second quarter. VCSU to a 48-32 lead into the locker-room. 

The Comets came out revitalized in the second half and were able to cut the Viking lead to three late in the fourth quarter.  Solid defensive possessions, a pair of free throws from Georgia Williams, and one more free throw from Hannah Schlecht sealed it for the Vikings. 

The Vikings were lead in scoring by Georgia Williams with 23. Three other Vikings were in double figures. Kennedy Henningsgard added 16 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter.  Alli Vandal dropped in 13 along with 11 rebounds for a double-double, and Nisja Bass scored 10. 

Mayville State was led in scoring by Andrea Skillingstad with 25 and Andi Gayner with 18. 

The Viking defense forced 28 Comet turnovers while only committing 13 of their own. With the win the Vikings improve to 16-7 overall and 7-3 NSAA. With the loss Mayville falls to 11-9 overall and 6-5 NSAA. VCSU hosts Waldorf University tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.  Mayville State travels to Dickinson State.

MBB: VCSU 70 MSU 56

The Valley City State men’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night, pulling away in the second half of a 70-56 victory over Mayville State.

The Vikings led just 26-25 at halftime but started the second half with a 9-0 run to take control of the game. Valley City State opened up a 53-39 lead midway through the second half. The Comets cut the advantage to 57-52 with 3:45 to go, but a quick 7-0 spurt by the Vikings put the game out of reach. VCSU outscored Mayville 44-31 in the second half.

VCSU improves to 13-11 overall and 5-5 in the North Star Athletic Association. The victory snaps a three-game losing streak, which had come by a combined seven points. The Vikings move into a four-way tie for fourth place in the NSAA standings. After Friday’s results, VCSU, Viterbo, Dakota State and Waldorf are all 5-5 in the conference.

Mayville State drops to 8-13 overall and 1-10 in conference play. The Comets remain in ninth in the NSAA standings and are now two games back of Presentation College.

Jayden Ferguson poured in a game-high 23 points for the Vikings while also adding six rebounds and three assists. The junior forward went 11-for-18 shooting. Ferguson now has 1,523 career points and moved past Dwayne Smith (1,509) on Friday for fifth place all-time in Viking history.

Rashad Satahoo finished with 22 points, including 17 in the second half. He knocked down four 3’s and was 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Austin Dunbar posted his conference-leading eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Chase Carpenter added five points off the bench for VCSU, and Ellwood Ellenson scored two. Point guard Jason Ralph did not score but dished out four assists and had four rebounds.

Valley City State shot 47 percent from the field (26-55), 32 percent on 3’s (6-19) and 86 percent at the line (12-14). The Vikings committed just three turnovers in the game, and the two teams combined for just eight total turnovers.

Kiree Robinson scored 10 points as part of a balanced Mayville State attack. Ben Maranan and Daniel Lindgren both added five points. The Comets had just five turnovers.

Mayville State shot 43 percent overall (24-56), 25 percent on 3’s (5-20) and was 3-for-3 at the line.
