N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Cole McKechney (FR/Calgary, Alberta) scored two of the Jimmies’ three second-period goals, and No. 9 Jamestown extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-2 victory over No. 6 Arizona State.
Jamestown (16-9-0-2) has defeated four top-10 teams during the streak, taking down then-No. 9 Colorado 6-2 and then-No. 8 Iowa State by identical 4-2 scores.
McKechney’s goals came at opportune times for the Jimmies, breaking ties of 1-1 and 2-2. He posted his first two-goal game of the season and now has six points (three goals, three assists) in his last four games.
Seth Lind’s sixth goal of the season put Arizona State ahead 1-0 at the 5:11 mark of the first period. Lind, who played his youth hockey in Jamestown, found the back of the net for the second consecutive game. Ryan Ostertag and Zack Kowalchuk were credited with assists.
The Jimmies got their first goal 2:50 into the second period, on Graeme Close (FR/Whitehorse, Yukon)’s first of the season. Setting up Close’s goal were Garret Browning (FR/Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Cole Zimmerman (FR/Lone Butte, British Columbia),
UJ took a 2-1 lead just over four and a half minutes later on McKechney’s fifth of the year. Assists went to Cole Sonstebo (JR/Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Eric Buckley (FR/Penticton, British Columbia).
Jason Richter (FR/Cranbook, British Columbia) was whistled for interference with 2:41 left in the second period, and the Sun Devils took advantage of the power play opportunity. Dylan Ostertag converted just 14 seconds into the man advantage to tie the game at 2. Austin Ehrlich and Ryan Ostertag got the assists.
McKechney finished the scoring flurry with his second of the game and sixth overall at 19:47 of the second. Cayle Bell (FR/Baldonnel, British Columbia) and Trevor Okino (FR/Richmond, British Columbia) assisted on the goal.
The third period was scoreless although Arizona State outshot the Jimmies 13-5. Jamestown successfully killed off three penalties in the final 20 minutes to preserve the win.
Tyson Brouwer (FR/Lethbridge, Alberta) had 28 saves for UJ. Rob Labonte made 22 stops for Arizona State before being pulled for an extra attacker with 1:41 left.
Jamestown’s next action is February 3 against Utah in the first of a two-game weekend series.
