WBB: #10 Jimmies 77, Bellevue 56
The Jimmie women’s basketball team led 14-0 less than four minutes into Sunday’s NSAA matchup with Bellevue (Neb.), and UJ cruised to a 77-56 win over the Bruins at the Jamestown Civic Center.
Alexis Watts (SR/Miller, SD) scored 15 points, Kyra Dewald added 14, five rebounds, and four assists, and Taylor Hammer recorded another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds as Jamestown improved to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in NSAA conference play.
Watts scored 10 of her 15 in the second quarter to help the Jimmies withstand a Bruin comeback. Cassidy Hubbs scored with 3:38 left in the half to make it 30-26 Jimmies, but Watts scored the next eight UJ points to give Jamestown 38-28 lead with 38 seconds left.
Four three-balls accounted for 12 of UJ’s 17 points in the third quarter, as Dewald (2), Hammer, and Paige Emmel all hit from long range to make the Jimmie lead 16 at the end of the third.
Hammer, Lissy McCulloch , and Jory Mullen scored four points each in the final quarter to help secure the victory. The UJ defense held Bellevue to just 6-of-22 shooting in the fourth and 10-of-32 overall in the second half to make a Bruin comeback even more of a daunting task.
Bellevue (9-10, 3-4 NSAA) was led by Caletria Curtis, who dropped in 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Ryleigh McCartney joined Curtis in double figures with 10. Taylor Cormier finished with nine points, six rebounds, and four assists.
MBB: Bellevue 74, Jimmies 73
The Jimmie men’s basketball team held a 12-point lead with 6:57 left in the game, but were outscored 8-0 over the final 4:19 in a 74-73 loss to Bellevue (Neb.) in a North Star Athletic Association conference matchup Sunday evening.
Jamestown (8-11, 4-3 NSAA) fell behind 12-2 just 3:37 into the contest, but gradually chipped away at the Bruin lead. Jake Hagler converted a three-point play to tie the game at 32 with 1:51 in the half, then a pair of free throws by Vlad Stoicoviciu six seconds later gave Jamestown their first lead of the half.
UJ took a four-point lead into halftime in large part to Hagler and Kiwane Crowder. Hagler scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Crowder hit for eight. The two combined to shoot 10-for-19 from the floor while the rest of the Jimmies were 3-for-17.
The Jimmies took control in the second half and pushed their lead to 13, at 69-56, after Hagler’s basket at 7:15 of the half. Five points each from Jaffrey Stillman and BJ Shelton pulled Bellevue (13-7, 4-2 NSAA) within three.
Jon Purintun scored the next four UJ points to stretch the lead to seven, but Stillman had six of Bellevue’s eight points in the final 4:19 to pull the Bruins ahead.
Trailing by one with four-tenths of a second on the clock, Jacob Havron was at the line for two foul shots, but was unable to convert either chance to send the game to overtime or give Jamestown the win.
Hagler finished with 26 to lead all scorers. Crowder had 13 points and six rebounds off the bench while Purintun ended in double figures with 10. Logan Brown chipped in with eight and Riley Henderson scored seven to go along with 10 rebounds.
Stillman led the Bruins with 19 and nine rebounds. Shelton and Blake Wilder each added 11.
Jamestown is at Presentation (S.D.) on January 14 while Bellevue hosts Dakota State (S.D.) the same evening.
