(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School basketball teams were each in one possession of picking up a pair of wins Friday, but Barnes County North was able to hold on in each of the contests to sweep the Tornadoes.

The girls of BCN won by just a single point, 58 to 57. Senior Tess Scott lead the Bison (7-3, 2-0 Class B District 5) had a team high 16 points, and junior Ashley Samek, who had three fouls in the first half, finished with eight points, including two key three pointers in the second half.

Shelby Roney put in 22 points in the loss for Oakes (4-5, 0-3), while freshman Nicole Schmitz added another 21. The Tornadoes had a two point lead at half, and a three point advantage going to the third quarter.

In the second part of the doubleheader, the Bison boys held on for a 59-56 victory. Similar to the girls game, Oakes (0-6, 0-2) had a two point lead at half, and were up three after three quarters.

Junior Allen Contreas scored 33 points for BCN (3-3, 1-0). Oakes had three players in double figures; junior Tyler Voightman (16), sophomore Andrew Detlefsen (12), and sophomore Max Muggli (10).

The Tornado girls play Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in Ashley against South Border, while the boys play at home Monday night at 7:30 versus Napoleon-Gackle/Streeter. Coverage starts 15 minutes before tip on KDDR-AM 1220/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com
