N.D. (AP) — A state legislative committee is endorsing a move from two to one license plate for North Dakota drivers.
The House Transportation Committee is recommending passage to the full House. Gas station and convenience store owners oppose a single license plate, saying it’s tougher for catch criminals who drive away without paying for gas.
Missouri Valley Petroleum spokesman Larry Froehlich says gas stations may average one or two drive-offs per day which adds up to a significant financial impact for the businesses.
The North Dakota Peace Officers Association agrees with the gas station owners. The association’s Bruce Burkett says the front plate is often the first contact officers have as they pass a vehicle.
The latest data from AAA says 19 states allow just one license plate.
