N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown High basketball teams hosted Minot on Thursday night in their first games of the 2017 portion of their schedule. The Magi boys came in as the top-ranked team in the state and were given a fight, but won 82-58.

The Blue Jay girls picked up their first WDA win of the season when they won a 55-44 decision. Big nights from Megan Gaffaney and Courtney Peterson paved the way.

Jamestown jumped out to a quick 19-6 lead midway through the first half, but saw the Magi close on a 17-1 run into halftime. That lead wouldn’t last long as Gaffaney and Peterson started to heat up. Gaffaney had 16 of her 23 points after halftime.

Jamestown quickly erased the three point deficit and didn’t trail again. It’s the first WDA win of the season for the Jays.

John Horgan fired a career-high 30 and helped the Jays give the No. 1 team in the state a run. Twice in the second half Jamestown cut a 20-point lead down to 10, but couldn’t get any closer. Justin Engg, the UMary commit, took over in the second half and helped weather the Jays comeback. He finished with 18 of his 20 after halftime.

The Jays will host Turtle Mountain on Saturday.
