CITY, IA (JimmieAthletics.com) – The University of Jamestown basketball teams were beaten by Morningside College in two completely different games. The women were handled by 30, 101-71 and the men lost a two overtime thriller 94-83. 

WBB: #12 Morningside 101, #10 Jimmies 71

After allowing a season-high 30 points in the first quarter, the 10th-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team trailed by 16 and was unable to overcome the deficit in a 101-71 loss to #12 Morningside (Iowa) Thursday. 

Morningside’s 101 points were the most allowed by a Greg Ulland-coached Jimmie squad, beating the previous mark of 96 by Northwestern (Iowa) on November 1, 2013.

Taylor Hammer (SR/Grand Forks, ND) led the Jimmies with 15 points and 15 rebounds, posting her fourth double-double of the season. Kyra Dewald (SR/Jamestown, ND) had 14 points and six rebounds, and Bryn Woodside (JR/Albert Lea, MN) finished with 13 points. McKayla Orr (JR/Ypsilanti, ND) chipped in with nine points, four assists, and three rebounds.

Madison Braun led all scorers with 27 points for the Mustangs. Lexi Ackerman had 15 points, while Taylor Bahensky came off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds. Sydney Hupp finished with 12 off the bench as well.

MBB: Morningside 94, Jimmies 83 (2OT)

The Jimmie men’s basketball team led by 18 points in the first half and by as many as 12 in the second, only to see the Morningside Mustangs rally from behind for a 94-83 double overtime victory Thursday night.

Jamestown opened up a 23-5 lead 8:30 into the game, but Morningside retook the lead at 35-34 with a minute before the half. Vlad Stoicoviciu (JR/Bucharest, Romania)’s three-pointer gave the Jimmies a two-point advantage into the break.

Riley Henderson (SO/Bismarck, N.D.)’s bucket made it 63-51 Jamestown at the 8:16 mark of the second half. Six minutes and 51 seconds later, a pair of free throws by Alex Borchers pulled Morningside ahead by one.

Jake Hagler (SR/Cando, N.D.) buried a three-pointer with 75 seconds left to make it 72-70 Jamestown, but Brody Egger was fouled with 16 ticks left and sank both foul shots to send the game to overtime.

Both teams scored six points in the first overtime and went to the second overtime tied at 78. Jacob Havron (SR/Pukalani, Hawaii) made two free throws with 2:36 left to give Jamestown an 82-81 lead. Morningside scored the next five points and put the game away with six made free throws.

Hagler led UJ with 20 points and was 6-for-10 from three-point range. Henderson had 16 points and five rebounds, Logan Brown(SR/Roseville, Minn.) added 15 points, and Havron posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Purintun finished with nine points and six assists.
