N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s new governor told state agency leaders that the goal during his administration will be to make state government more efficient and responsive to citizens.

Republican Doug Burgum took office Thursday. The one-time computer software executive turned philanthropist outlined his goals to state agency directors Thursday at the state Capitol in Bismarck.

Burgum touted familiar campaign themes during the 15-minute meeting, such as promises to cut spending and halt property tax increases, and to turn downtown areas into vibrant social and economic hubs that are attractive to live in.

Burgum said the state must find ways to complement the state’s economy that’s largely dependent on oil and agriculture.
