(NewsDakota.com) A senior at Oakes High School has been selected as one of two delegates from North Dakota to attend a program in Washington D.C. next spring.
Alyx Schmitz will be representing the state at the 2017 United States Senate Youth Program set for March 4-11.
The program, which was created in 1962, is designed for those who wish to enter public service. 104 participants from across the county will have the opportunity to hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, State and Defense department members and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a Supreme Court Justice.
The entire cost of the trip is paid for courtesy of The Hearst Foundations; a national philanthropic organization. In addition, each participant will also receive at $10,000 college scholarship.
Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota is a Senate Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee for the 2017 program.
