SD (VCSUVikings.com)- The Valley City State University basketball teams capped a perfect start to conference play Saturday with a doubleheader sweep at Presentation College.

The Viking women rallied in the fourth quarter for a 66-59 victory, while the men blistered the nets for an 88-82 win in the nightcap. It was the second straight sweep for the Vikings, who won both games at Mayville State on Friday night.

Both Valley City State teams have now won six straight games. The Viking women improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the North Star Athletic Association. VCSU’s men are now 9-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play as well.

Up next: VCSU’s women host Concordia-Moorhead on Monday night for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. VCSU resumes conference play with home doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against Dakota State University and Bellevue University.

 

Women: VCSU 66, Presentation College 59
Georgia Williams scored 10 straight points for VCSU in the fourth quarter as the Vikings rallied to victory by outscoring the Saints 18-7 over the final 10 minutes.

VCSU trailed 52-48 entering the final frame, but Williams’ fourth quarter burst put the Vikings ahead 60-57 with 4:30 remaining. Back-to-back baskets by Alli Vandal and Sara Schwanke capped an 11-0 run for VCSU as they went ahead 64-57 en route to the 66-59 victory.

The Vikings trailed by as many as nine points in the second quarter, 33-24, but closed the half on a 9-2 run to get back with 35-33 at the break.

Vandal scored 17 points to lead four Vikings in double figures. Williams finished with 15 points – 10 in the fourth quarter – and went 3-for-6 on 3’s. Lexi Lennonadded 14 points, and Sara Schwanke scored 10 off the bench. Point guard Nisja Bass finished with five points and a team-high eight rebounds.

VCSU shot 39 percent from the field (27-69), 29 percent on 3’s (6-21) and 86 percent at the free throw line (6-7). Presentation College finished at 38 percent shooting (21-56), 22 percent on 3’s (4-18) and 72 percent at the line (13-18).

The Saints held a 39-30 edge on the glass, including a 14-10 edge in offensive rebounds. VCSU’s defense came up with 12 steals and forced 29 Saint turnovers. The Vikings committed just 16 turnovers.

Presentation College was led by Cora Lopez who had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

 

Men: VCSU 88, Presentation College 82
Rashad Satahoo scored 24 points and VCSU shot 54 percent Saturday as the Viking men completed the weekend sweep with an 88-82 victory.

The Vikings shot 60 percent in the second half (18-30) as they outscored the Saints 52-45 over the final 20 minutes.

VCSU trailed 49-44 with 15:23 left in the game, but outscored the Saints 21-6 over the next six minutes to take a commanding 65-55 lead. The Vikings led by as many as 13 points down the stretch en route to the victory.

Four Vikings scored in double digits, led by Satahoo’s team-high 24 points. The junior guard went 4-for-8 on 3-pointers. Jayden Ferguson poured in 22 points. Austin Dunbar went 8-for-12 from the field and finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Elwood Ellenson shot 5-for-7 as he posted 12 points and six rebounds in the victory.

Alex Quist added eight points, and Denzel Kennedy and Jason Ralphcombined for six points off the bench.

VCSU shot 54 percent from the field (34-63), 35 percent on 3’s (6-17) and 78 percent at the line (14-18). The Saints finished at 48 percent on field goals (31-65), 20 percent on 3’s (4-20) and 84 percent on free throws (16-19).

Presentation College held a 35-25 advantage in rebounding, including a 12-4 edge on the offensive glass. VCSU committed just 10 turnovers compared to 15 for Presentation.

Donnell Minton scored 28 points to lead the Saints.
