N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – With the latest storms and snow accumulation, Montana-Dakota Utilities Company is urging customers to check their natural gas meters and furnace vent areas.

In a release from the company, customers are prompted to clear the snow and ice away from their meter set and furnace vent area to prevent a hazardous situation.

“A buried regulator may become clogged, affecting the supply of gas to the appliances,” the company states. “When melting occurs and the snow becomes wet and heavy, it can put pressure on the meter setting and cause strain on the associated piping. In extreme cases, the possibility exists that the piping could break.”

If damage has occurred around the meter set, you’re asked to call Montana-Dakota at 1-800-638-3278 so the problem can be fixed.
