CITY, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has suspended McKenzie County Sheriff Gary Schwartzenberger after an investigation by the state attorney general’s office.
Schwartzenberger tells the Williston Herald that he was notified by a Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent on Wednesday night November 24th that his suspension was effective immediately.
Earlier this year, the McKenzie County Commission asked Dalrymple to remove the sheriff from office, citing an alleged workplace culture of bullying and retaliation.
Schwartzenberger unsuccessfully asked a judge to stop the effort. The sheriff will get a hearing before Dalrymple decides whether to oust him from office. Schwartzenberger says he looks forward to getting due process.
