NEB. (VCSUVikings.com)- The Vikings Women’s Basketball Team improved their record to 6-3 with a pair of wins at The York College Classic. Friday VCSU beat host York College 82-61 and Saturday they defeated Bethany College 66-58. The Vikings will have some time off before returning to the court to face Minnesota State University-Moorhead on November 23rd in an exhibition game.

The Valley City State women’s basketball used a big fourth quarter Friday night to defeat York College on day one of the York College Classic.The Vikings led just 55-53 entering the fourth, but outscored York 27-8 over the final 10 minutes to pull away for an 82-61 win. 

Four Vikings scored in double figures Friday as part of a balanced attack. Lexi Lennon and Sara Schwanke both poured in 15 points, and Lennon added team highs of six rebounds and five assists. Georgia Williams scored 13 and Kennedy Henningsgard added 11 points. Four other Vikings scored five or more points in the win.

The Vikings led 23-21 after the first quarter and 45-36 at halftime. York College closed the third quarter with an 8-2 run to get within 55-53 after the third. The Vikings opened the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run thought to regain control of the game.  

Valley City State outscored York College 42-20 inside the paint. VCSU shot 44 percent overall (28-63), 29 percent on 3’s (6-21) and 83 percent at the line (20-24). York finished at 37 percent overall (20-54), 37 percent on 3’s (7-19) and 70 percent a the line (16-20).

The Vikings finished with 37 rebounds (16 offensive), 13 assists, 12 steals, five blocks and 16 turnovers. VCSU forced York College into 25 turnovers. York had 36 rebounds. seven assists, seven steals and two blocks.

Kennedy Henningsgard poured in 19 points Saturday as the Valley City State women’s basketball team won its third straight game.

VCSU outscored Bethany College 23-16 in the fourth quarter Saturday, pulling away for a 66-58 victory on the final day of the York College Classic. Henningsgard led three Vikings in double figures Saturday. The junior guard went 6-for-13 shooting – including 2-for-4 on 3’s – to score 19 points. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Alli Vandal posted 13 points and seven rebounds, and Sara Schwanke added 10 points. Lexi Lennon scored nine points and had three assists.

VCSU shot just 37 percent overall (23-62), 31 percent on 3’s (5-16) and 71 percent on free throws (15-21). The Vikings had 34 rebounds (12 offensive), nine assists, one block and 16 steals. VCSU committed just 15 turnovers while forcing Bethany into 27 turnovers.Bethany College shot 38 percent from the field (17-45), 31 percent on 3’s (4-13) an 67 percent at the line (20-30).

VCSU led 16-11 after the first quarter and 33-26 at halftime. Bethany College closed the gap to 43-42 after three quarters, and took a 44-43 lead early in the fourth. But the Vikings outscored Bethany 23-14 the rest of the way for the victory.
