COUNTY, N.D. (KFGO) – Authorities say Dakota Access Pipeline protesters were turned back in their attempt to get to the pipeline construction site Sunday.

The land is on Army Corps of Engineers property and at the site where authorities recently tore down a walk bridge protesters built to cross a creek.?

Morton County spokesman Rob Keller says approximately 200 to 250 protesters showed up yesterday. About 100 crossed the creek either by canoe or by wading. They were met by a line of law officers at the top of a local landmark called “Turtle Hill.” The protesters set fires along the bottom of the hill in an effort to force the officers away. Police used extinquishers to get the fires out. One person who was ferrying protesters across the creek was arrested. Keller says others eventually left the site.?

In another incident several hours earlier, protesters backed up a semi at high speed toward two burned out military trucks set on fire by protesters last month. Keller says at the last minute, the driver slammed on the semi brakes and drove off.?

Those wrecks are on what’s known as the “Back Water Bridge” and still block Highway 1806.
