(JimmieAthletics.com) – The 12th-ranked Jimmie women’s basketball team got its first taste of top-20 competition this season, as they squared off against #15 Briar Cliff (Iowa) at the Mayville Classic, hosted by Mayville State University.

Despite a fourth quarter rally by the Chargers, Jamestown came out on top by a score of 68-59.

After leading 31-27 at the half, UJ stretched their lead to 12 points after Bryn Woodside (JR/Albert Lea, MN) converted a three-point play with 2:10 to go in the third. Jenna Doyle (SO/Princeton, MN)’s bucket with 6:13 to play gave the Jimmies their biggest lead of the night, 18 points, at 55-37.

Briar Cliff scored the next eight points of the game to cut the UJ lead to 10, but a basket and pair of free throws by Woodside gave Jamestown a 14-point cushion with 3:11 to play.

The Chargers went on a 10-3 run over the next 1:39 to get within seven points and make things interesting, but Alexis Watts (SR/Miller, SD) and Kyra Dewald (SR/Jamestown, ND) sank both ends of double bonus free throw attempts to seal the deal.

Paige Emmel (JR/Bismarck, ND)’s career-high 16 points paced the Jimmie offense. She also led the team with 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Watts finished with 13 points on 3 of 4 shooting and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Woodside reached double figures in scoring with 12.

Jenna Doyle added 8 points and 6 rebounds off the bench for UJ.

Jamestown (1-1) struggled from the field, making 34.6 percent of its shot attempts and was 4 of 16 from three-point range. Briar Cliff shot 46.3% in the game (25 of 54) while attempting only 4 long-distance shots, making one.

Morgan Hansen and Erin Grimshaw each had 12 points for Briar Cliff (0-1).

The Jimmies travel Bismarck on Tuesday to play an exhibition game against University of Mary at 6 p.m.
