City, ND (VCSUVikings.com)- In a rivalry as intense and competitive as VCSU-Jamestown football, long winning streaks are so tough to keep going. That was on full display Saturday as the favored Vikings fell at the University of Jamestown.
After winning five straight games in the series, the Vikings were snake bit by turnovers Saturday as they dropped a 27-21 game to the rival Jimmies. That ends a VCSU winning streak that spanned the last three seasons. The Vikings had not lost to Jamestown since Oct. 26, 2013.
Valley City State committed three turnovers Saturday and was only able to muster 231 yards of total offense. The Jimmies gained 322 total yards, including 233 on the ground.
The teams traded scores in the first quarter with VCSU’s Kurtis Walls finding Zackary Schmidt in the back of the end zone on a 9-yard score that helped tie the game at 7-7 after one quarter. The Jimmies added another TD in the second quarter on a 21-yard keeper by quarterback Dylan Klatt.
Jamestown took a 14-7 lead into halftime, but the Vikings fought back to tie it at 14-14 late in the third quarter. Walls again hit Schmidt for a touchdown, this one from 11 yards out. The extra point by Harrison Hammel tied the game at 14-14 entering the fourth quarter.
The Jimmies struck quickly in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns in five minutes to take a 27-14 lead. VCSU cut it to 27-21 when Walls found Lum for a 16-yard score with 3:03 left in the game, but Jamestown recovered the onside kick and proceeded to run out the clock.
Walls finished the game 20-for-42 for 175 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Jacob Duilio gained 62 yards on 14 carries. Schmidt led the receiving corps with six catches for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Lum also had six catches for 58 yards and a score.
Jamestown’s offense was led by running back Kendrick Sullivan who carried the ball 34 times for 125 yards and a score. Quarterback Dylan Klatt added 77 rushing yards on eight carries. He also passed for 89 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Nicholas McBeain led the Viking defense with 21 tackles. Ben Bruenjes had 12 tackles and a 46-yard interception return that set up VCSU’s first touchdown. Jesus Munozadded 11 tackles.
Despite the loss, the Vikings lead the Paint Bucket series, 38-31, and lead the overall series with Jamestown, 59-53-5.
