MN – (NewsDakota.com) People are remembering Fargo native, pop singer Bobby Vee, whose early 1960’s hits included the chart-topping “take good care of my baby.” Vee’s son, Jeff Velline, says Vee, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011, died early Monday morning.

Born Robert Velline, Vee was just 15 when he took the stage at the Moorhead armory to fill in after the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “the Big Bopper” Richardson.

Ken Harvey, a Fargo native, who now lives near Nashville, met Vee swimming at Island Park when they were kids and it wasn’t until he saw him at the Moorhead concert that he realized Vee was a musician. It wasn’t long after, the 15-year old Harvey joined the band as a guitarist and singer.

Vee and his band, the shadows, had a regional hit with “Suzie Baby.” Vee went on to record 38 top 100 hits, 10 of which hit the top 20.

Bobby Vee passed away in a Rogers, Minnesota nursing home at the age of 73 on Monday, October 24th.
