ND (Newsdakota.com)- The Valley City High School football team couldn’t pull off the upset in their regular season finale suffering a 40-20 loss to undefeated and top ranked Bismarck St.Mary’s 40-20.The Hi-Liners finish the year 5-4 and 3-4 in the west.

The Saints led 14-0 after the opening the quarter with a pair of touchdowns from Kurt Dickhut. St.Mary’s led 27-0 before Valley City got on the scoreboard. There was 41 seconds left in the 2nd quarter when Levi Nix found Justin Manson for a 38 yard score,the 2 point conversion attempt fell short.Cole Spies returned the ensuring kick off for a 83 yard touchdown pushing St.Mary’s advantage to 33-6 at the half.

In the 3rd quarter Saints linemen Joseph Richter blocked a Valley City punt and recovered it in the end zone,St.Mary’s got the PAT making it 40-6.In the final quarter Eli Allen had a 64 yard touchdown run with Matt Brandvold running in the 2 point conversion. Nate Rodriguez had an 8 yard reception to pick up Valley City’s final points of the season.

Saint Mary’s will begin postseason play next Saturday hosting Central Cass.
