City, ND (VCSUvikings)- Sophomore Clarissa Olson, led the Vikings with 14 kills Wednesday night as they defeated Mayville State in four matches: 27-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19.

Valley City State improves to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. Mayville State dropped to 9-13 overall and 2-4 in conference play.  

After going back-and-forth with the Comets in the first set, the Vikings fell short in the end as the Comets earned the first win of the match 27-25.

During the second set the Vikings and Comets kept the score close once again, but the Vikings were able to keep a consistent lead throughout the entire set. The Vikings recorded a 25-20 win in the second set and evened out the match 1-1.

The Vikings came out right away during the third set and instigated a powerful tone which lead them to a 25-17 victory for the set, and a 2-1 lead over the Comets within the match.

The Comets came out battling in set four keeping the score close until the Vikings were able to build up a lead mid-set and finish off the match defeating the Comets 25-19 recording the 3-1 win.

VCSU’s freshman Taylor Sharp contributed to the Viking victory by recording seven service aces during the match along with eight kills. Nicolette Bloomer tallied 11 kills, whileMegan Johnson added 10 kills.

Talyor Balkan led the Vikings with 30 assists, and Meagan Schwarzrock had 23. Jaycee George led the defense with 16 digs and recorded two aces.

Mayville State was led by 16 kills from Stephany Wold and 11 kills from Hannah Bliss. Megan Kolness lead the Comets with 34 assists, and Sydney Boom tallied 11 digs.
