Nathan was born on January 17, 1922 in Emmons County, North Dakota, the son of Andreas and Philipena (Pfaff) Nathan.  He attended country school there and he later moved to Barnes County where he attended Grand Prairie and Minnie Lake Schools.  He married Sylvia Iris Slater on May 11, 1942 in Finley, North Dakota.  On June 9, 1942, he joined the United States Navy and served until October 23, 1945.  He served on a destroyer, the USS Doran, the entire time.  Upon his return Sylvia and Otto farmed in the community of Pillsbury, North Dakota until 1971 when they moved to the Hope, North Dakota community where they farmed until retiring in 1986.

He was a former member of Minnie Lake Church and Hope Redeemer Lutheran Church where he had served on both councils.  Upon making their home in Valley City in 1986, they became members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.  He was a life member of both the VFW and American Legion.

The Lord always came first in Otto’s life, then his family, who were so special to him!  Otto loved to read, dance and farm.

Otto and Sylvia raised two sons, Dennis (JoAnn), Valley City, and Gary (Shari), Hayward, Wisconsin.  Including his sons he is survived by his wife Sylvia, of almost 75 years, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, nine sisters and four brothers.  Otto died at the age of 94, on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.

The funeral service will be 10:30 am, Monday, October 10, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City.  Visitation will be 4-6 pm Sunday at the church with a prayer service at 6 pm.  Visitation will continue Monday one hour before the service at the church.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Valley City.
