N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——The Carrington Cardinal football team picked up there first Region 1 victory of the season by defeating the Oakes Tornadoes 54-20. The Cardinals led 40-0 at halftime of there 2016 homecoming at Stadium ’76 and rolled up 422 total yards of offense. Five Cardinal players scored in the game, leading the way were sophomore running backs Drew Page and Kaden Wolsky. Page carried the ball 6 times for 114 yards and 3 TD’S, and Wolsky picked up a pair of TD’S on 7 carries for 88 yards. Carrington had a total of 24 rushing attempts for 264 yards and 8 TD’S. Hayden Schmitz completed 7 of 8 passes for 158 yards and had 1 rushing attempt good for a 26 yard TD. Braxton Hewitt had 2 carries for 26 yards including a 29 yard TD run. Jayden Rosenau also had 2 carries good for 6 yards and a TD from 3 yards out. Trey Rosenau hauled in 3 receptions for 46 yards. Jayden Shipman had 2 receptions for 31 yards, Hewitt had 1 catch for 41 yards, and Payton Smith snagged 1 pass good for 40 yards.

Trailing 40-0 at the break, Oakes would give up 14 more unanswered points to start the 3rd quarter and trail 54-0.  The Tornadoes would score the final 20 points of the game.  QB Coy Awender connected with receiver Tyler Voightman for 3 TD passes. Awender’s first TD pass came on the final play of the 3rd quarter, connecting from 44 yards out. The final scores were from 30 and 18 yards. Voightman finished the game with 4 receptions for 100 yards and 3 TD’S. Awender was 9 for 17 passing good for 184 yards, with 3 TD’S and 2 interceptions. Running back Chris Schmitt also hauled in 5 receptions for 84yards and picked up 31 rushing yards on 16 carries. The Tornadoes finished with a net zero yards rushing on a total of 28 attempts, due to 7 sacks that resulted in a minus 40 yards.

Carrington improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in region play and the Tornadoes dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in region play. The Cardinals will travel to Oak Grove in Fargo next Friday and the Tornadoes will host Northern Cass.
