 Interview with Coach Nielson

Coach’s Comments after Day 1

We went 5-9 on the day with good tennis all the way around.  Liam Williams had his best day ever as a tennis player.  He pushed the #4 seed in his match and also won two matches against good opponents.  Liam’s skills and play has improved dramatically throughout the season and peaked at regionals.  His game management, consistency, and will to win was superb.  He will be one to watch next year when he puts in the time in the offseason.

Zach and Collin rebounded from their match against West Fargo and played very good singles today.  They both hit their shots, moved their feet and played to win.  Collin believed and hit his topspin very well throughout the day.  Zach gave 100% and hit the deck more than once trying to get a ball back.  I am proud of both of you.

Trevor and Hale played their best of the season as well.  They believed and just played tennis.  Against the #4 seed, they lost the 2nd set 6-3, but three of those games were lost at deuce.  They moved into their shots and hit cross court and took the net over.  They stepped into balls and put them away.  These two couldn’t have put into action what we were trying to do any better.  Great job Trevor and Hale.

Hunter and Riley took a little bit to get going in their first match, but they rose up and took over the net being aggressive.  In the quarterfinals, GFC came ready to play and we played tentative.  We were rolled in the first set.  We settled into the 2nd set and started to play aggressive.  We had a set point at 5-4, but lost that point and the next two games to lose the match.

That loss puts us in the consolation quarterfinals at 9am tomorrow morning.  If we win, we will have state qualified and will play two more matches for seeding purposes. We could finish anywhere from 5th through 8th.  If we lose that match, our tournament and season is done.  Lets get out there and play loose and confident!
