N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – It’s that time of the year again that the Jamestown Kiwanis Club packages meals for their “Kids Against Hunger” event.
The club’s 6th Annual meal packaging event will have volunteers package meals for families in North Dakota and the Upper Midwest that need it most, especially kids.
“If their tummies are hungry, children can’t focus on reading and math,” said Amanda Thrift. Thrift is Jamestown Kiwanis’ president-elect. “A properly educated child is better prepared to be a parent, employee and community citizen.”
Last year, the event featured 400 volunteers that packaged $50,000 worth of ingredients, totaling more than 212,000 meals that benefited families. Since the first Kids Against Hunger event in 2011, the Jamestown Kiwanis has packed $190,000 worth of ingredients into more than 850,000 meals.
“If we raise enough money to make our goal, we’ll package our 1-millionth meal,” said Janna Bergstedt, Jamestown Kiwanis’ chair of the Kids Against Hunger event.
Each meal costs 25 cents to package and distribute. The event is set for Saturday, October 29th at Stutsman Harley Davidson. The club is again looking for volunteers and donations.
“An anonymous donor is offering $1 for every $2 donated,” Bergstedt said. “So each donation makes a big difference.”
Two shifts will be available during the day for volunteers to work. You can volunteer and learn more by e-mailing JamestownKiwanis@gmail.com. For more information on the club, visit www.facebook.com/JamestownKiwanis.
