FORKS,ND (NEWSDAKOTA.COM)-This past weekend, ND Special Olympics State Soccer was held in Grand Forks with Valley City taking 2 adult and 1 youth team. In Adult Division 2 the Valley City Bridgesters brought home 6th place going 1-2 beating The Grand Forks Blizzard 8-5 while losing to Mandan 11-1 and Grand Forks Lightening 4-1.
In Adult Division 4, The Lightning Bolts brought home the gold medal beating the Bismarck Thunder 6-0, the Cass County Eagles 4-2 and the Mandan Kool Kats 8-4.Mike Venhuizen was named to the All-tournament team and Kandice Novak received honorable mention.
In the youth division, Valley City took a team to state for the first time. The Purple Power tied their first game 5-5 against the Cass County tigers, before winning against a team from Dickinson. Sunday morning they played a hard battled game against the Grand Forks Eagles and came up short, but met up again against the Grand Forks Eagles in the gold medal falling short again but proudly bring home the silver medal.
David Lynch for the youth team was named honorable mention to the all-tournament team. The Teams were coached by John Schonert, Emerson Meidinger and Sue Lloyd, the unified players that played with the athletes as partner players were Ian Nelson, Tyler Gustafson, Ashton Schonert, Tucker Schonert, Chloe Neslon, Tori Nelson and Derek Bear. The teams were combined with athletes from the Open Door Center in Valley City/Lisbon as well as Students from VCHS and St. Kates.
