City, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——The Carrington girl’s volleyball team captured the 2016 Valley City Optimist Volleyball crown going 6-0 on the day and improved to 16-0 on the season. The Cardinals entered the tourney 10-0 and 25-0 in set play. The Central Cass Squirrels pushed the Cards to a third set, handing Carrington their first lost set of the season. Carrington responded after the second set loss with a convincing third set victory 15-6 to capture the championship. The Cardinals defeated Central Cass 25-19 in the opening set, dropped set two 25-27, before taking the final set. Twenty-four teams were participating in the tournament, 6 different pools of 4 teams started play at 8:00 A.M.
The Cardinals started the day in pool play (C) with victories over Dickinson Trinity (25-11, 25-20), L-M-M (25-6, 25-15), and F-S-H-P (25-18, 25-19). The Cards defeated region 3 foe South Border in the quarterfinals 25-17 and 25-16. South Border ended Carrington’s chance at a state tournament bid in last years regional semifinal 3-0. Carrington advanced to the championship match with a 2-0 win over Richland (26-24, 25-12). Central Cass defeated Oakes 2-1 in the other semifinal and Oakes defeated Richland 2-0 to capture third place. Maara Nelson led the balanced Carrington offensive attack with 53 kills during the tournament. Carmen Pederson added 39 kills and Emerson Hoornaert added 30 kills. Carrington finished the tourney connecting on 95% of their serves. The Cardinals will host the defending state champion Lamoure Loboes on Tuesday night at Carrington High School. The match will be aired on AM 1600 KDAK and www.newsdakota.com The match will start at approx. 7:00 P.M. with a pregame starting 25 minutes prior, visiting with Cardinal head coach Dale Peaslee in the pregame.
