(NEWSDAKOTA.COM)-The Hi-Liners suffered their 1st loss of the season at the hands of Dickinson Trinity 28-18 Friday night at The Henry Biesiot Activities Center.After a dismal 1st half Valley City found themselves down 21-0 at the intermission. Kaden Kuntz had 2 touchdowns and Lucas Jones connected with Noah Sickler for a 47 yard score. The Titans posted 237 yard on offense while limiting Valley City to 54.
A different looking Hi-Liners hit the field in the 3rd quarter. Trinity was forced to punt on 3 occasions and VCHS found the end zone late in the period; after getting wrapped up at the 5 Nate Rodriguez pitched the ball back to Levi Nix who scored his 2nd touchdown of the year. The 2 point run failed and Valley City went into the game’s final 12 minutes down 21-6.
Rodriguez scored with 6:30 left in the 4th but The Hi-Liners failed to pick up the 2 points. It took Valley City less than a minute and a half to score again. Jaden Ostern recovered a Trinity fumble at the 49. After 2 plays Nix had his 2nd TD of the night. The Titans stopped VCHS’ attempt for 2 points leaving the score 21-18. On the ensuring possession Trinity’s Dawn Kram broke free for a 40 yard touchdown and Alex Scherr kicked the extra to seal the win 28-18.
The Hi-Liners added 253 yards offensive in the 2nd half to finish with 307 for the night. Trinity had 347. Rodriguez rushed for 177 yards on 18 carried with a touchdown. Eli Allen collected 91 on the ground. Nix was 2 for 14 passing with 26 yards connecting with Justin Manson for a 25 yard reception. Cole McGough led the defense with 11 tackles, Drew Oberlander had 8 with Jaden Oestern and Seth Hanson each adding 7.
Valley City’s record drops to 3-1 and 1-1 in the west. They return home next week hosting Watford City.
