CITY,ND (VCSUVIKINGS.COM)-The Valley City State University volleyball team made quick work of the North Star Athletic Association volleyball opener Tuesday night.

The Vikings put together their best performance of the season as they swept visiting Dakota State, 25-12, 25-18, 26-24 to win the first match of the 2016 North Star volleyball season.

Megan Johnson racked up nine kills to lead a balanced Viking attack on Tuesday. Clarissa Olson, Autumn Johnson, Hailie Wilds and Taylor Sharp all had seven kills each in the match. Jaycee George recorded 10 digs, Hailie Wilds had three aces, and Taylor Balkan (16) and Meagan Schwarzrock (15) combined for 31 assists.

Valley City State improves to 2-7 overall and 1-0 in the North Star Athletic Association. Dakota State drops to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in NSAA.

The Vikings played a near flawless first set as they rolled to a 25-12 victory to take control of the match. After VCSU won set two, 25-18, the two teams battled back and forth in the third set. Dakota State had one set point with a 24-23 lead, but the Vikings scored the final three points to close out the match.

VCSU had eight service aces and five service errors. Dakota State was hurt at the serving line, racking up eight errors and only two aces. The Vikings had eight team blocks in the match.

Carly Rozell led the Trojan attack with nine kills. Clarissa Blick had five kills and Tessa Weeldreyer added four.

Up next: Valley City State heads to Dubuque, Iowa, for four matches Friday and Saturday at the Clarke University Tournament. Dakota State is on the road for a conference match at Mayville State on Friday.
