Coaches Comments
Valley City had a very good day winning over 40% of our matches. Riley and Hunter made the consolation finals. Collin and Zach went 2-2 at #2 doubles. Trevor and Austin notched two wins a piece while Hale/Josh and Bennett picked up a victory each. Liam and Jack played some very tough draws and went 0-2, but gained some very valuable experience against tough opponents.
This tournament show how much we have improved as a team to this point. We are on the right track.
We do, though, need to work on winning between points. We need to reflect on the last point and then mentally move onto the next point and mentally and physically prepare for the next point. Many points, we aren’t mentally and physically into that point until about the 4th stroke. As over 50% of all points are finished by the 4th stroke, this area is a huge concern. This is an easy concept for all parties to understand, but executing this concept is very tough. It takes focus and mental discipline to make it happen. We have one practice before our next match to improve this area.
Another area to improve is playing to win each point. We need to ‘yellow light’ (speed up through) all strokes and believe. Go get the ball and put it where you want to. Have a ‘never going to lose this point’ attitude before and during each point.
Tennis is almost as much physical as it is mental. We fix these mental things and we put some fear into teams come regions!
Next action is Tuesday and Thursday starting at 4pm at home.
