(NewsDakota.com)——–Carrington sophomore running back Kaden Wolsky ran the ball 15 times for a game high 145 yards, but his 26 yard TD run with 6:18 to go in the 4th quarter was the biggest 0f the night giving the Cardinals a 12-8 victory over the Rugby Panthers. Cardinal senior qb/rb Braxton Hewitt also ran for 134 yards on 22 carries as the Cardinals racked up a total of 281 yards of offense, all via the ground game. A stiff south wind limited the air attack for the Cards, attempting just 8 passes, going 0-8 with 3 interceptions.
The Cards scored first on a 1 yard QB keeper from Hayden Schmitz with 6:14 to go in the 2nd quarter and the only points of the half. The Panthers would tie the game up with 8:55 to go on a 35 yard TD run from junior RB Kaden Jaeger. The Panthers attempted an extra point kick but an errant snap turned into the “fire call” and the holder for the PAT try Anders Johnson (starting QB) scrambled right and found Joel Berg in the back corner of the end zone for the 2 point conversion giving Rugby the lead at 8-6.
Carrington rallied back after a 45 yard kickoff return by Lucas Geiszler to the Panther 47 yard line, setting up Wolsky’s 26 yard TD run securing the 12-8 Cardinal win. Carrington picked up there first win of the season for first year co-head coaches Kyle Smith and Michael Page, improving to 1-1. Rugby dropped to 0-2 on the season.
