N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Public Schools begin today and will see a new system to help support those children who have not yet hit the benchmark of their respective grade.
The Multi-Tiered Systems of Support will be implemented into grades K-12 and is a concept to help get additional support to the neediest students and help them get to grade level. Superintendent Robert Lech says MTSS is a step up from the previous RTI system.
Lech says the schools will be focusing on the intensive students in math and reading for now and the concept is to develop pathways across all levels to provide an appropriate and challenging pathway to graduation for all of their students.
Superintendent Lech stated that their focus will be the neediest kids because the statistics behind those who drop out and don’t receive that extra care is alarming.
Lech stated that kids in the system will not be receiving a different education, but rather a more focused education known as “alternative core”. Lech stated that they find students who need the interventions through assessments and tests, so kids that need the help get help from day one.
MTSS is a system that is being developed and used in schools nationwide, but Jamestown has developed their own curriculum and pathways that will be specific to Jamestown students.
