N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The City of Jamestown held a special Public Works Committee meeting to discuss and hear more about the two proposals for curbside recycling in Jamestown.
Rick Anderson of Dakota Sanitation brought forth more information to the council regarding his proposal for recycling in the community.
Anderson reported that the recycling facility built in Jamestown would transport and ship unsorted material to a site in Shakopee, MN.
The service would be either weekly or monthly pickup and the billing would be included on the monthly water bill. Anderson pointed out that there was anticipated to not be enough value in the recyclables to make any revenue share payments to the city of Jamestown.
Ralph Friebel with Renaissance Recycling had the second proposal. He stated that he would do pickup with an automated cart. He also pointed out that they would still take glass through drop-off only.
Friebel stated that pick-up would be every other week and all material would be brought to the drop-off site to be manually sorted. Six additional workers would need to be employed and the present building would need to be expanded. The City would also receive revenue sharing of 40%.
No decision was made as to what bid the city would go with, but it was indicated by Mayor Katie Andersen that they would like to approve of a plan that will incorporate the “pay-as-you-throw” ability.
City Beautification Committee President Joan Morris asked the council if they were still on track to have recycling implemented fully by Summer 2017, to which Mayor Andersen and Councilman Steve Brubakken replied yes.
The council will have discussions with the Sanitation Department regarding recycling and pay-as-you-throw in the future and the term of the contract could take place during city budget hearings later this month.
Recycling will be discussed again at the September Public Works Committee meeting.
