(NewsDakota.com) An Oakes man has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge from a shooting in the city last month.

31 year old Christopher Jerome Schmidt was charged in June with a Class C felony count of Reckless Endangerment. He entered his plea in an initial court appearance in Southeast District Court Tuesday morning.

The complaint filed alleges Schmidt shot himself in the arm with a .22 caliber rifle on June 7 after an argument with his girlfriend at a home in Oakes and took her prescription medication in order to “send a message” to his girlfriend.

A preliminary hearing is set for September 6.
