Wessels, age 86, of Valley City, ND, formerly of Dazey, ND, died Friday, July 1st at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 7th at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home Chapel in Valley City. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home on Thursday morning. Inurnment will be at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery near Mandan, ND.
Herb was born July 5th, 1929 in Lemars, IA to Karl Wessels and Louise (Beidelspacher) Wessels. After his father’s death the family moved to Campbell, MN. In July of 1951, Herb was drafted into the Army where he served in the Korean War until September of 1952. He was in three major battles and earned 3 bronze stars and several other medals of honor. He married Delores Thormodson in 1954. The couple lived in Breckenridge, MN, where they raised six sons. Herb has always had a love for trucking and so he made that his career. He trucked for several different trucking companies over the years, and even team trucked with his son Darrel. Herb enjoyed hunting, working on old tractors, socializing with the boys, and going for breakfast with Blair and Bob.
Herb is survived by 4 sons, Steve Wessels (Michelle) of Sunman, IN, Darrel Wessels (Donna) of Hunter, ND, David Wessels (Cindy) of Waconia, MN, and Joel Wessels (Sharon) of Marble Falls, TX; one brother, Larry Wessels of Willmar, MN; 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Herb is preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Louise Wessels, brothers, Alfred Wessels and George Wessels, sister, Frieda Nyhof, two sons, Douglas Wessels and Ronald Wessels, and best friend Blair Bakke.
We would also like to thank the wonderful staff at the Sheyenne Care Center for the amazing care Herb received. He was truly blessed by all of you!
