N.D. – (NewsDakota.com) The Carrington Cardinals lost for just the second time this season, losing 5-0 to the Thompson Tommies in the state class B state tournament semifinal game. The Cardinals could not generate any offense against Thompson pitcher Tyler Hegg, collecting just 2 hits in the game. Payton Smith and Jayden Shipman, the eighth and ninth batters in the batting order picked up singles in the third and seventh innings for the only hits. The Cards best scoring opportunity came in the 4th inning leaving runners stranded at 1st and 3rd base to end the inning, the only time a runner reached as far as 3rd base the entire game.
Braxton Hewitt started on the mound and took the loss allowing 4 runs (all earned) in 5 2/3 innings, scattering 8 hits, striking out 4 batters , and walking 2. The Tommies would score 1 unearned run in the 7th inning off Cardinal relief pitcher Jayden Shipman. Hegg went all 7 innings for the Tommies, allowing the 2 hits, striking out 4, walking 2, and hitting 2 batters. The Cardinals will take a 21-2 record into the 3rd place game versus the loser of top seeded Beulah or 4th seeded Park River/FL on Saturday.
