N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler addressed teachers and educators from the area during a Q & A regarding the decision to rewrite the state’s Common Core standards.

Baesler addressed media first before talking with the educators. She stated that the rewrite will not be a start-over, but rather a way to improve the current standards. She stated that the decision on this was not something that happened over night.

Baesler stated that she was doing a state tour to gain insight on what the teachers thought about the rewrite, but to also get their input on what changes should be made to the current standards.

Baelser pointed out that the Department of Public Instruction is seeking teachers to help rewrite the state’s education standards for English and math. The last time those standards were revised was in 2010.

New standards will be developed by a committee of 35 teachers for each class and will move through the review and revision process. The rewrite is intended to be ready for adoption in early 2017.

Applications are due by June 1st. Information for the committees can be obtained online at www.nd.gov/dpi.
