N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Mary Smith and Richard Ovind are both bound to wheelchairs, but that doesn’t limit their spirit.

Both Mary and Richard represented Jamestown at the Freedom Resource Center Awards Luncheon held in Fargo, North Dakota on May 10th. Mary was one of three guest speakers who spoke about their experiences with the Freedom Resource Center.

Freedom Resource Center’s mission is to provide services that increase independence for people with disabilities, making them an equal and valued participant in society. Beth Dewald is an Independent Living Advocate with Freedom Resource.

During the awards portion, Richard Ovind was announced as the Advocate of the Year for Freedom Resource. He has spent his time with Beth and Freedom Resource Center to help make the community of Jamestown more accessible and ADA certified.

One example of Richard’s work with Freedom Resource Center is the parking lot at Menard’s. During painting of the parking lot lines, Richard noticed something wrong.

Mary stated that what Richard was doing was just what anyone else who cares about the community would have done.
