N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Gubernatorial hopeful Doug Burgum spent Monday evening with roughly 30 Jamestown residents discussing his campaign and views on several issues facing the state of North Dakota.
Burgum opened the meet and greet by explaining his backstory and why he wanted to run for North Dakota Governor. He is well known as the individual who started Great Plains Software in the 80’s, ultimately growing it until he sold it to Microsoft for $1.1 billion in 2001. Burgum stated that the reason he was running for Governor was because the government needed a businessman to fix the budget.
Burgum discussed his decision to select Brent Sanford as his running mate, pointing out the fact that Sanford had overlooked the oil boom in Watford City. Burgum was asked what his views were on property taxes in the state. He pointed out that it was different in each community, but the change would need to come from within the government.
Another item that Burgum addressed was the across the board budget cuts announced by Governor Jack Dalrymple. He stated that when a government makes cuts, it implies that the budgets had been perfect.
Burgum said in a recent debate, opponent Wayne Stenejhem announced that there were plans in place to help with the announced cuts. Burgum pointed out that if there were plans in place, no one should be out of work because of it.
Burgum addressed more federal issues as well including the transgender bathroom issues, his support of Donald Trump and his views on Obamacare. He wrapped up by stating that he enjoyed giving to causes that gave back and pointed out that it was the main reason he was investing in himself for Governor.
